Business Rates Surveyor

SpenceLooker Recruitment is working with a substantial, privately owned property business to appoint a Business Rates Surveyor to its in-house team.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of rating matters across a multi-billion-pound UK commercial property portfolio. You’ll work directly with Property, Asset Management and Development colleagues, shaping decisions on acquisitions, refurbishments and vacant space while identifying meaningful savings across the estate.

The role

You will:

• Review rating assessments and identify opportunities for appeals and reductions.
• Prepare and negotiate challenges with the Valuation Office Agency.
• Develop compliant strategies to manage empty property rates across retail, office and industrial assets.
• Advise internal teams on rating implications of acquisitions, redevelopment and occupation plans.
• Assess the impact of revaluations, reliefs and transitional arrangements.
• Work with local authorities on liabilities, billing and BID matters, and prepare clear financial reports and case files.

About you

We’re looking for an an ideally qualified MRICS Rating Surveyor with around 3–10 years’ experience in business rates advisory or closely related commercial property valuation. You’ll have handled rating casework and VOA negotiations, understand how to assess liabilities and spot savings, and be comfortable advising colleagues beyond the rating team. Valuation Tribunal experience would be valuable.
